As soon as the calendar marks the first of September, I dig out the fall decorations, and strategically sprinkle a few Halloween ones throughout the house. But one of the very first tasks is to create a fall porch decorating plan.
In past years, I loved pulling up in front of the house after work and being greeted with pumpkins, mums, cone flowers, corn stalks, ornamental grass, and the like. Although, I’m working from home this fall, I still enjoy the view of the porch through the front door.
In the post about my trip to Stoltzfus Pumpkin farms, I noted, since there’s a huge variety of heirlooms, hybrids and other assorted pumpkin varieties to choose from, I often can’t tell the difference. So, I use the terms pumpkin and squash interchangeably. For you purists and gardeners out there who know better, forgive me.
Before the trip to the pumpkin farm, I purchased a coir doormat with burgundy text and “red” mums. The mums which appeared red and had plant tags indicating as much, inexplicably morphed into a soft-orange color. It was a happy accident as the reddish-orange pumpkins I planned to buy were too wide to fit safely on the porch steps.
Instead, I selected four squash and/or pumpkins that were hues of green and peach. Here’s a pic of the largest one. It is a perfect pairing with the chameleon-like mums.
And these two below are gorgeous. Love the pale green and this striped variety. I wish I had asked the woman at the farm stand what they were, and if they were edible.
To accompany the squash, doormat, and mums, I added a beautiful orange blanket, some mini gourds, a basket, a few paper luminaries, and a glittered wicker pumpkin – and viola!
I hope the peach/green color scheme provides some out-of- the box color inspiration for your fall porch decorating ideas.
