Pumpkin and Peanut Butter Dog Treats

As fall winds down, what can you do to show a little extra love to your fur babies?  Whip up a few batches of homemade Pumpkin and Peanut Butter Dog Treats.

I’m a huge fan of processing my fall pumpkins and squash into tasty baked goods. Once I’ve had my fill of the annual glut of pumpkin rolls, bread, cookies, etc., I use my homemade pumpkin puree to make dog biscuits for some of my four-legged friends.

Pumpkins contain lots of nutrients for dogs like beta carotene and fiber that make it a nutritious treat. Pumpkin and Peanut Butter Dog Treats make delicious and thoughtful handmade Christmas gifts.  They are so good in fact – I’ve had several pet parents put in request for them around the holidays.

Plus, the recipe is super easy.  It would be a great baking project for the kiddos to help make.  Let’s get started.

Ingredients:

1 cup whole wheat flour

1 ½ cups white flour

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

2 large eggs

3/4 cup pumpkin puree

3 tablespoons of peanut butter (chunky or creamy)

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
A large white bowl with the flour, and four small glass bowls with two eggs, pumpkin puree, peanut butter and salt and cinnamon on a wooden cutting board.
  1. Mix the first four ingredients in a bowl and set aside.
A white melamine bowl with the flour, and the salt and cinnamon being mixed in.
  1. In a large bowl, mix the last three ingredients until well combined.
A small bowl with the wet ingredients including the pumpkin puree, peanut butter and eggs.
  1. Start adding the flour mixture ½ cup at a time to the wet ingredients.  I find it easier to mix this recipe by hand instead of using an electric mixer.
A bowl with the mixed bowl before it is chilled.
  1. Once the dough comes together, roll into a ball.  Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Since the dough is sticky, I find it easier to rollout when it’s chilled
  1. Flour the board and rolling pin thoroughly as this dough will be sticky. Roll dough to ½ inch thick.  Use a 2-inch bone-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the dog biscuits. If you have any dough left over, use a shot glass to make round biscuits.
  2. Bake for 15 – 20 minutes on a parchment-lined cookie sheet.

  1. Cool completely on a wire rack.
  2. This recipe makes about two dozen bone-shaped dog biscuits and a dozen round treats.

They can be stored in an airtight container for up to one week.
